She studied theater with Northwestern University and graduated with her degree in 1990. Gunn was a student at the British American Drama Academy in London at the time of 1988. She shared a home with Pamela Adlon after moving to Laurel Canyon Los Angeles. Gunn was famous for playing Skyler White in Breaking, the AMC series Breaking. In 2013 and 2014, she received her the Primetime Emmy Award in Outstanding Leading Female Actress in Drama Series. In August 2013, she wrote a piece of an opinion piece in The New York Times that examined the dislike shown by the public towards her character.
